How to Choose the Right Dining Table Extension Folding Table

If you’re hosting extra guests for dinner or need more table space for a special event, a folding dining table extension is a practical and affordable solution. But to make sure it blends seamlessly with your current setup, there are a few key things to consider — from seating capacity to table height.

1. Decide How Many People You Want to Seat

The first step is knowing how many extra people you’ll need to accommodate. As a general rule:

120cm long folding tables seat 4 people (2 on each side)
150–180cm long folding tables seat 6 people (3 on each side)
240cm long folding tables can seat 8–10 people comfortably

If you’re using the folding table as a dining table extension, match the length to what you need based on your guest count, available space, and dining habits.

2. Choose the Right Width

Standard dining tables are usually around 90 – 100cm wide. This gives enough room for plates, platters, and decorations down the centre. A folding table that’s at least 70–100cm wide will feel proportionate and provide enough room for diners on both sides.

If you’re placing the extension on the end of your dining table (not the side), you can usually get away with a narrower table, depending on how it’s being used.

3. Match the Height of Your Existing Table

One of the most overlooked — but crucial — steps is measuring the height of your existing dining table. Standard dining tables are typically 73–76cm high, but it’s best to measure from the floor to the top of your table to be sure.

Once you know your current table height, look for a folding table with legs that bring the top to the same level. A mismatch in height can look awkward and make the table uncomfortable to use.

4. Think About Storage and Flexibility

A great advantage of folding tables is how easy they are to store when not in use. If space is tight in your home, look for a model that folds flat and can be stowed in a cupboard, behind a door, or under a bed.

Also consider whether you’ll want to use the table outdoors or for other occasions — portability might be a bonus feature worth having.
